Instant Noodle Soup Cups
Instant noodle soup cups have been implicated in causing serious burns by directors of burn units at hospitals across the country. Dr. David Greenhalgh, Chief of Burns at Shriner's Hospital for Children in Northern California, conducted a study to determine if the design of the soup cups increased the risk for burn injuries. The study found that soup cups that are tall, narrow and lightweight are at least three times more likely to tip over than shorter soup cups with more stable bases. Due to this design, there is a significant risk that instant noodle soup cups may tip over onto children causing severe burns.
A majority of recently interviewed hospitals report that they see burns from instant noodle soup cups several times a week. According to doctors, these cups most often tip over spilling hot liquid and noodles onto young children. The noodles cling to the skin causing burns that are more severe than those caused by hot liquid alone. In approximately one out of every five cases, the patient eventually needs surgery to repair the damage.
