Young Teen Fails to Wear Seatbelt and Dies in Louisville Crash

Recently, a young teenager was killed in a Louisville, KY car crash because she was not wearing her seatbelt. According to police, 14-year-old McKayla Sallee died at the accident scene as a result of failing to wear her seatbelt.
Sallee was the passenger of a 17-year-old teenage driver. According to authorities, Megan Salle, the teen driver, lost control of her vehicle and overcorrected, causing the car to flip over multiple times.
This Northern Kentucky auto accident indicates that parents need to continue talking to their teen drivers about seatbelt safety and driving safety in order to save lives. Some seatbelt statistics prepared by the James Madison University's Comprehensive Safety Plan indicates the following:
- Car accidents are the leading cause of death for people under age 44.
- One out of every five drivers will be involved in a crash this year.
- About 90 percent of people think seatbelts are a good idea, but less than 14 percent use them.
- Approximately 35,000 motorists die each year in crashes, and about half of them could have been saved if they had worn a seatbelt.
- People are 25 times more likely to die when they are ejected from their vehicles than when they remain fastened in their cars.
- Children in motor vehicle accidents are often crushed to death by adults not wearing seatbelts.
- Out of 100 children who die in car accidents, 80 most likely would have survived if they were properly secured in child safety seats or seatbelts.
- One out of four serious injuries in auto accidents is caused from occupants being thrown into each other due to a failure of seatbelts.
