On Monday, January 9th, 2012, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will shut down the ramp from Story Avenue to Interstate 64. The news release indicated that this temporary closure will help decrease the high number of crashes at this interchange following the closure of the Sherman Minton Bridge.
Since September 9th, 2011, the Sherman Minton Bridge has been closed. As a result, 11 Northern Kentucky auto accidents have taken place at the Story Avenue ramp.
After discovering the high accident rates in this location, crews closed the exit ramp from westbound I-64 to I-65 and installed a stop sign for traffic entering I-64 from Story Avenue. However, Matt Bullock, chief district engineer for the Kentucky Department of Highways Louisville District said they “have observed a disregard for the traffic control devices at the Story Avenue ramp resulting in an increase in crashes.”
In previous years, only two crashes occurred at this site. Because of the increase in Kentucky accidents at the Story Avenue ramp since the Sherman Minton Bridge closure, officials have decided to close the ramp completely until the Sherman Minton Bridge reopens.
The attorneys of Schachter, Hendy, & Johnson would like to wish everyone involved in these Northern Kentucky crashes a full recovery and would like to remind drivers to pay attention to traffic signs in order to minimize accidents.
