Ohio law firm settles pain pump cases

Two young athletes who sued a pain-pump maker after knee surgery reached a settlement with the manufacturer yesterday in U.S. District Court in Columbus.
Colleen McClain and Brittany Hamilton, both 21-year-old Lewis Center residents, reached a confidential agreement with California-based Breg, Inc., attorneys confirmed. A trial in the case was scheduled to begin April4.
Penny Unkraut Hendy, the attorney for McClain and Hamilton, said neither she nor her clients could comment on the settlement, which was negotiated with a federal mediator. She said the settlement will not be made public.
Hendy's law firm has two additional lawsuits against Breg pending in federal court in Columbus for two other young women. Hendy said hundreds of similar lawsuits are pending nationwide.
