Louisville Accident Kills Pedestrian

A Louisville accident involving a pickup truck and a pedestrian leaves a homeless man dead after he is struck crossing Preston Highway. The incident took place at approximately 7:30 PM on Friday evening, January 8, 2010, in the 6600 block of Preston Highway.
According to the Louisville Metro Police Department, the victim, Ward Chance Jr., 66, was pushing a grocery cart full of groceries across the northbound lanes when he was struck by the pickup truck. Rescue crews transported Chance, who has been described as a homeless man, to University Hospital where he was treated for multiple blunt force injuries sustained in the accident.
According to Deputy Coroner Larry Carroll, Chance died just before 9:00 PM.
Police have said that the unidentified driver of the pickup truck indicated that he did not see Chance, who was reported as wearing dark clothing at the time of the incident.
According to police spokesperson Alicia Smiley, Chance was not in a crosswalk when he was struck by the pickup truck.
The fatal Louisville accident is still under investigation by local authorities. However, police have indicated that neither drugs nor alcohol were believed to be contributing factors in the accident. Smiley also indicated that no charges will be filed.
