According to Lexington police, Officer Michael Steele, 26, was clocking drivers along Winchester Road near Dayton Avenue when he clocked a speeder. He turned on his lights and sirens and attempted to catch-up with the speeding driver before he lost control of his police car and hit a fire hydrant, brick building and two utility poles.

Rescue crews transported Steele to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital where he was treated for injuries sustained in the accident. He was later released. Details concerning his injuries were not immediately made known.

Police were unable to obtain a description of the speeding car or a license plate number. Police report that the driver got away.

Police are still trying to determine how the officer lost control of his police car, said Lexington police Sgt. Chad Bacon.
