On Saturday, January 7th, 2012, a two-vehicle crash in Mount Vernon occurred in the afternoon and caused many injuries and fatalities. According to the reports, five people were taken to area hospitals for medical treatment following this Rockcastle County crash.
Jada Hayes, a 7-year-old girl from Mount Vernon, died early Sunday morning at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center in Lexington. The Fayette County Coroner’s office reported that the young girl died from multiple blunt-force traumas.
At the time of the accident, Jada Hayes was traveling with her father Tony Hayes, 29, of Mount Vernon, and his girlfriend Jody Hayes, 23, of Brodhead. Malachi Hayes, Tony’s 5-year-old son, was also traveling in the vehicle. Jody was driving her 1989 Ford Thunderbird westbound on US 150 when she attempted to make a left turn onto Maretburg Road. At that time, the car collided with a 1990 Lincoln.
Wendy Riley, of Mount Vernon, the 41-year-old driver of the Lincoln, was traveling with her 7-year-old daughter Aubriauna Jones. Both were taken to Rockcastle County Hospital with injuries but were treated and released.
In the other vehicle, Jody Hayes was not injured. Tony Hayes was injured and treated at Rockcastle County Hospital and released. Sadly, his daughter died, and his son was critically injured and taken to UK Medical Center. Unfortunately, his son succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday and died due to multiple blunt force injuries he sustained in the crash.
After an investigation into the crash, Kentucky State Police indicated that neither Jada nor Malachi was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.
The Northern Kentucky accident attorneys of Schachter, Hendy, & Johnson would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the children who died in this tragic Rockcastle County crash.
