Around 2:30 PM on Saturday, January 21, 2012, a car crash in Franklin, KY occurred involving a Franklin City Police Officer. The accident took place on Highway 100 East. According to reports, Kentucky State Police responded to the scene to investigate this 2-car accident.
Witnesses told accident investigators that a vehicle crossed the center line and struck the police cruiser head-on. LaDonna S. Southard, 30, of Franklin, was driving her vehicle eastbound on KY 100, when it crossed the center line for some unknown reason. A westbound driver of the vehicle in front of the police cruiser swerved to miss the oncoming car, and Officer Kelly Mayfield, 36, of Bowling Green, KY, was hit head-on as a result.
Officer Mayfield was on duty and traveling in his marked police cruiser en route to a non-emergency complaint at the time of the accident. He had to be extricated from the car and transported to the Bowling Green Medical Center by ambulance. Thankfully, he was wearing his seat belt. He was treated for broken bones; however, he was later transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville for further medical treatment. At this time, he is in stable condition, but there has been no update on his medical condition.
The female driver who hit the police cruiser was pronounced dead at the accident scene by Simpson County Deputy Coroner Patrick Crafton. According to an investigation, she was wearing her seat belt at the time of the accident, and alcohol is not suspected in this crash.
The Kentucky State Police officials are still investigating the cause of this crash.
