While manufacturers of toning shoes are watching profits skyrocket, medical professionals are allegedly watching their patients suffer injuries from these shoes. Instead of getting in shape by wearing Skechers Shape-ups or Reeboks EasyTones, consumers are dealing with painful injuries, including inflamed Achilles tendons.Some doctors have treated Achilles tendonitis that they believe was caused by toning shoes. According to the USA Today, among these doctors is Bryan Markinson, chief of podiatric medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. He says that some of his patients, who were not in the best physical condition, inflamed their Achilles tendons while donning a pair of toning shoes.
What You Need to Know About Achilles Tendonitis
If you have been wearing Skechers Shape-ups, or some other brand of toning shoes, you need to become familiar with Achilles tendonitis. This condition is defined as an inflammation of the Achilles tendon, which is the tissue that links the calf muscles to the heel bone. MayoClininc.com lists the symptoms of this ailment as follows:
- Pain in the back of the leg and above the heel
- Tenderness or stiffness, especially in the morning
- Swelling of the Achilles tendon
- Weakness in the lower leg
- Crackling sound when the Achilles tendon is touched or moved
