Many who are taking Pradaxa are unaware that the drug they are taking to stop blood clots and strokes has been connected to severe internal bleeding. However, advocacy groups and some members of the medical community have been arguing that Pradaxa’s benefits are outweighed by the life-threatening internal bleeding risks, for which there is no antidote.
What You Need to Know if You Are Taking Pradaxa or Have Taken It
In December 2011, the FDA launched an investigation into Pradaxa after they received numerous reports of injuries and death. According to USA Today, Pradaxa reports included:
- 3,781 side effects reported by users in 2011
- 542 deaths of Pradaxa patients during the same year
These adverse reported cases have surpassed all other injury and death reports submitted to the FDA for that year. In addition to having the most number of overall adverse reports, the Institute for Safe Medication Practices’ Quarter Watch report revealed that Pradaxa had the highest number of strokes, hemorrhages, deaths, and kidney failures. Due to these high numbers of injuries and deaths, many have chosen to file Pradaxa lawsuits.
A central court has been established to handle over 100 Pradaxa lawsuits that have been filed so far. Recently, a federal judge ruled that patients injured while taking Pradaxa can proceed with lawsuits. Judge David Herndon set the initial hearing for October 3rd and indicated that trials should begin within 18 to 24 months. Judge Herndon also denied drug maker Boehringer Ingelheim’s attempt to dismiss the case.
