If you were told there was a medicine that could help your health condition, would you take it? More than likely you would. You would trust that your doctor is prescribing the right medication. You would trust that the makers of the medicine would have been thorough in their research, testing, and manufacturing of the drug, and you would trust that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) wouldn’t have approved the medication for distribution in this nation if the drug wasn’t safe. You are not alone. This is what we as consumers have to do – trust people in those positions.
But what if the medication didn’t perform the way a company promised it would? What if it caused serious side effects or even death?
Take Pradaxa, for example. This drug, manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals Inc., is a type of blood thinner for people who are prone to developing blood clots. Patients with atrial fibrillation were told that this drug would inhibit the enzyme that causes the blood to clot, essentially preventing blood clots from forming. However, this harmful drug has now been linked to serious side effects and even death.
Pradaxa users thought they were helping prevent blood clots and strokes by taking this medication, but some found out a little too late that they were at higher risk for internal bleeding. Sadly, many have died due to this harmful drug.
Pradaxa’s drug maker has admitted to receiving over 260 reports of death worldwide between 2008 and 2011 linked to the drug’s harmful side effects. However, experts believe the numbers of fatalities are much higher.
Our Northern Kentucky Law Firm’s Response
If the German drug maker would have properly conducted their research regarding the risk of internal bleeding complications and provided information and warnings to health care professionals and to Pradaxa patients, many lives would have been saved.
Instead, our Pradaxa lawyers are reviewing claims for injuries associated with internal bleeding, hemorrhaging, heart attacks, strokes, gastrointestinal bleeds, and death.
If you suffered injuries while taking Pradaxa, or if a loved one died from fatal Pradaxa bleeding or hemorrhages, you need to talk with a lawyer about your legal options and find out what type of compensation you may be entitled to for your loss.
