Pradaxa is the subject of an ongoing investigation that was started in December 2011 by the FDA. However, other countries, such as New Zealand and Japan, were the first to notice many cases of elderly patients suffering from internal bleeding when switching from Warfarin to Pradaxa – ultimately leading to their deaths.
By the time the U.S. started their investigations, there were already over 260 cases where patients had bled to death while taking Pradaxa. Because of how serious Pradaxa’s bleeding risks are and the fact that there is no reversal, there are many individuals and families left without their spouse, father, or mother.
Even Pradaxa’s own website states that “PRADAXA can cause bleeding which can be serious and sometimes lead to death.” The website goes on to list people who would be more at risk, including:
- Those over 75 years of age
- People with kidney problems
- Patients taking dronedarone or ketoconazole for kidney problems
- Those who have stomach ulcers or have stomach or intestinal bleeding
- People who also are taking blood thinning medication, like aspirin products
Elderly Patients More at Risk of Bleeding
Although Pradaxa can harm anyone – no matter the age – elderly people are in the group that has a higher Pradaxa bleeding risk. It’s bad enough that the medication heightens a person’s chances of bleeding; however, it is worse that there is no way to stop a bleed.
According to a study that was cited in the Journal of Neurosurgery, Pradaxa does pose a serious risk of uncontrollable internal bleeding in the elderly. The study reports that, once Pradaxa’s blood-thinning effects cause internal bleeding, there is no effective reversal agent, even if doctors are present.
Because Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals Inc. is making a drug – Pradaxa – that has dangerous side effects, they should be held accountable for their actions.
