Broken bones at birth may include:
Sadly, statistics show that two percent of stillbirths and neonatal deaths occur from fractures and bone injuries during childbirth. This accounts for about six to eight deaths per 1,000 births, and clavicle fractures are the most common type of broken bone injury that occurs during childbirth.
The clavicle, also known as the collarbone, attaches the arm to the body. When a baby is delivered vaginally, clavicle fractures can occur if the infant is constricted during childbirth or when a doctor attempts to assist with a difficult delivery by means of different maneuvers.
Sometimes it is difficult to spot a broken bone on an infant because he or she cannot tell you that they are experiencing pain. However, when you pick up your baby under the arms, your infant may cry if a clavicle fracture has occurred. Another clue that your baby may be injured is when he or she holds their injured arm or shoulder still. Although bone injuries can be difficult to see, there are several tests, x-rays, and imaging scans that can be performed to determine if your child has suffered from a broken bone.
If your newborn has suffered from a bone fracture during delivery, your child may have to undergo surgery, physical therapy, splints and slings, and even take medication early in his or her life. Because bone injuries are a form of a Kentucky birth injury and medical malpractice, you may be entitled to receive financial compensation for your emotional suffering and also for your baby's pain, suffering, and medical bills.
