The Facts behind Kentucky Birth Injuries

With improvements in the medical field, the implementation of new procedures, and updates with technical equipment, it is a mystery why birth injuries in Kentucky and throughout this nation still occur. Sadly, birth injuries do happen more often than we would like to hear about.

It is estimated that about 6-8 birth injuries per 1,000 births occur in the United States, and fewer than two percent of serious birth injuries account for neonatal deaths and stillbirths.

Many causes of Northern Kentucky birth injuries occur from the following risk factors:

  • Large infants weighing over 9 pounds 15 ounces
  • Deliveries that require the use of forceps or vacuum extractors
  • Breech delivery
  • Excessive or abnormal traction during childbirth

When infants are delivered with mechanical forces, they may be injured due to compression and traction, resulting in a birth trauma, brain injury, Cerebral palsy, Erb's palsy and many more birth injuries.

Larger babies over 4500 g are more susceptible to birth trauma. The majority of birth injuries are self-limiting and heal on their own, or are corrected over time; however, there are many birth injuries in Ohio and Northern Kentucky that have serious, lifelong affects on innocent children and their families.

Sadly, the majority of short-term and lifelong debilitating birth injuries could have been avoided with recognition, thorough monitoring, and anticipation of risk factors. The outcome of the infant generally reveals if the highest standard of practice is followed or not.

Because doctors have the use of ultrasonography, fetal monitoring and other technological advancements, they should recognize birth trauma risk factors prior to the start of a vaginal delivery. Additionally, doctors are aware that forceps and vacuum deliveries can cause serious birth injuries, thus the use of this equipment has declined over time. However, many doctors still utilize this equipment, so many birth injuries, such as tissue damage, hemorrhaging, fractures, Erb's palsy, brain damage, and nerve damage happen as a result of doctors still using these medical instruments.

If you believe that your baby was injured at birth due to a doctor's mishap, you may have legal rights to a financial recovery.
