Newborn Clavicle Fracture: What Went Wrong at the Kentucky Hospital?

If your baby has suffered a clavicle fracture at birth, you are probably still trying to determine what went wrong. Was it something you did? Could the doctor have prevented it? Will your child fully recover?

New parents have enough to worry about, without the added stress of wondering if their child will heal properly from a birth injury. If your child has sustained a clavicle fracture, which is one of the most common birth injuries, the prognosis is most likely good.

Causes of Newborn Clavicle Fractures
A newborn clavicle fracture may be the result of a difficult birth. Some of the frequently cited factors include the following:

  • Use of forceps during delivery
  • Use of vacuum extraction during delivery
  • Force from being pulled through the birth canal

It is important that you do not blame yourself for the birth injury, instead, you need to get to the bottom of what went wrong during the delivery. An experienced Kentucky birth injury attorney can help you uncover the true cause of your baby’s clavicle fracture.

Signs of a Clavicle Fracture
Of course, a newborn cannot tell you when he or she is in pain, so you need to watch for certain signs that would indicate a broken collarbone. Some of these symptoms include:

  • Your child won’t move his or her arm. Instead, the arm is kept still against the side of the body.
  • You can see or feel a fracture with your fingers.
  • A hard lump begins to develop a few weeks after your child was injured.
  • Your baby appears to be in pain when lifted under the arms.

If you notice any of these symptoms, you need to have your child evaluated by a physician. While a clavicle fracture will generally heal itself, sometimes additional measures need to be taken to repair the damage and ensure proper healing.

Newborn clavicle fractures can often be avoided. If you feel that the doctor or medical staff may have been negligent, which ultimately led to your child’s injuries, you may be able to take legal action. Contact an experienced Kentucky birth injury attorney for advice.
