A Difficult Delivery Can Result in Erb’s Palsy & Other Kentucky Birth Injuries

It’s amazing how quickly you can expand your vocabulary with extensive medical terms you had never even heard before. As your child’s doctor throws words your way, such as “Erb’s palsy” or “brachial plexus,” you may find yourself in a daze trying to process what he or she is trying to say. You may research these terms until the wee hours of the morning, as you attempt to determine how your child suffered this type of Kentucky birth injury.

Erb’s palsy is one of the many birth injuries that can result from a difficult delivery. It involves weakness or paralysis of the arm caused by a nerve injury.

To fully understand this injury, you must first become familiar with the anatomy of the arm. The nerves in the arm are connected to a group of nerves close to the neck, known as the brachial plexus. This nerve group is what controls the feeling and motion in the fingers, hand and arm.

Factors that lead to Erb’s palsy

There are a number of factors that can lead to Erb’s palsy, most of which are linked to a challenging delivery. Some of these factors include:

  • Breech birth (feet first delivery)
  • Pulling excessively on the shoulders during birth
  • Larger than average baby
  • Baby’s head and neck drawn to the side upon exiting the birth canal

Many medical advances have been made over the years, which have prevented countless birth injuries. Unfortunately, if a doctor doesn’t implement one of these necessary techniques, the child can suffer Erb’s palsy.

Where to go for help

If you were told that your child has Erb’s palsy, you may not have been informed of the true reason the condition occurred. You owe it to yourself and your family to get to the bottom of what went wrong and who should be held responsible for your child’s injuries.
