AndroGel and other testosterone medications can cause both hemorrhagic and ischemic strokes.
AndroGel can cause ischemic strokes (strokes caused by blood clots) as a result of increasing hematocrit, red blood cell count and thickening the blood. These effects make the blood prone to clotting, including clots in the brain.
Additionally, AndroGel increases the level of estradiol in men. Studies have shown that heightened estradiol levels can double the risk of having a hemmorhagic stroke (stroke caused by a bleed).
In March 2015, the FDA announced testosterone use results in an increased risk of strokes. The FDA is requiring testosterone manufacturers to add strokes as a risk disclosed in testosterone labeling.
