In a surprise twist, a major manufacturer of medical devices has turned the spotlight on itself regarding possible defects with its knee replacements known as NexGen. These artificical knees manufactured by the Zimmer corporation have been associated with loosening and other problems in some cases. However, until recently the potential for lawsuits arising out of such incidents was largely overlooked by most plaintiff lawyers. Until recently, only a handful of cases had been filed, all of which were consolidated in the federal district court in Illinois. That all changed when Zimmer decided to sue the lawyers who were advertising for clients who suffered injury as a result of alleged defects in Zimmer NexGen knee replacements. Once Zimmer filed suit against 7 different law firms, interest in the litigation was greatly increased, resulting in a flurry of new ads and blog posts. It looks like Zimmer tried to extinguish a fire by dousing it in gasoline. Well played Zimmer!
