What Are Some of the Reported Problems with Pain Pumps?

Many people who are dealing with chronic pain from osteoporosis, multiple sclerosis, failed back surgery syndrome, or from other causes of pain have used pain pumps, also called infusion pumps. The devices have helped patients manage pain by delivering a steady rate of medication over time through an infusion pump into the blood.

However, not everyone who has had drugs administered through a pain pump has been helped. Some patients have been harmed or even killed as a result of a medication overdose. This has happened due to problems or defects with the pumps. Certain problems people have reported include:

  • Software glitches
  • Mechanical failures
  • Dead batteries
  • Confusing instructions from the manufacturer

Pain pumps have caused so many problems, injuries, and fatalities to many over the last several years. In fact, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has indicated that they have received 56,000 reports of problems with pain pumps and 500 reports of deaths.

The FDA is now working to make pain pumps safer for patients by establishing new guidelines for manufacturers for approving new pain pumps.

Although the FDA is working to save lives and get the defective pumps off of the market, many patients and families of patients have already suffered from defective pain pumps. If you need help holding the negligent company accountable for your injuries or pain and suffering, please call an Ohio and Kentucky pain pump attorney at the Law Office of Schachter, Hendy, & Johnson today at 888-606-5297 for a complimentary consultation with an experienced lawyer.
