Meconium Aspiration Syndrome is Not Something Parents Plan For

Comments (0)
Childbirths are common - birth injuries are not.

In many cases, expecting parents take the miraculous process of childbirth for granted. The sad truth is that many children suffer birth injuries, such as Meconium Aspiration Syndrome (MAS). Even worse, the injury can be the result of negligence by a doctor.

MAS occurs when the baby breathes meconium, the baby’s first stool, and amniotic fluid into the lungs. A baby can experience MAS at anytime during the birth process and MAS can lead to complications resulting in a serious birth injury.

When meconium is inhaled, the baby is in jeopardy of having his or her airways blocked. The baby can have a difficult time breathing, resulting in a lack of oxygen being sent to the brain. When the new baby’s brain is deprived of oxygen the baby can suffer brain damage.

The ramifications of caring for a child who has suffered MAS resulting in brain damage can be devastating. Not only will a family have to determine how to care for the child, they will also have to figure out how they will pay for the medical expense and long-term care.

If you or someone you know has a child who has suffered from a birth injury and you believe the doctor was to blame, you should contact one of our experienced Kentucky birth injury attorneys at the law office of Schachter, Hendy & Johnson at (859) 578-4444 or (888) 606-5297.
