Recently, the Endocrine Society called for large scale safety studies to evaluate the true risks and benefits of testosterone replacement therapies, like AndroGel. The clamor for safety studies follows on the heels of multiple recent studies finding that testosterone treatment increases the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and blood clots. Further, the FDA recently announced that it plans to re-evaluate the safety of testosterone therapy in light of these recent studies.
Although testosterone medications, like AndroGel, are approved to treat hypogonadism due to known diseases of the testes, pituitary and hypothalamus, testosterone is being marketed for age-related symptoms, including "low testosterone." In light of this marketing, the Endocrine Society is calling for "the development of more large-scale randomized controlled trials to determine the true risks and benefits of testosterone therapy...."
