Is it Malpractice When a Material Infection Causes Cerebral Palsy?

Comments (0)
A parent’s worst nightmare is learning that his or her child has developed a serious birth injury. Unfortunately, that reality is all too common. In some cases it is a result of negligence by the  doctor.

Researchers have discovered that maternal infections can cause cerebral palsy. They have learned that bacterial and viral infections can be passed from the mother, through the placenta, resulting in brain damage.

Such maternal infections that can lead to a serious birth injury include cytomegalovirus (CMV), toxoplasmosis, varicella (chickenpox), rubella and syphilis.

Researchers have indicated that persistent fevers may be a sign that the mother has contracted a maternal infection. It is imperative that doctors who treat feverish pregnant women pay special attention and be alert for the possibility that the mother has an infection.

However, in some cases, doctors fail to detect maternal infections. The results can be catastrophic for the unborn child. Parents of children who have developed cerebral palsy are encouraged to speak with an experienced Kentucky birth injury attorney to learn of potential options available to them. The future care of their child can depend on it.
