Dr. Atiq Durrani is a spine surgeon who has performed surgeries at Cincinnati Childrens Hospital and West Chester Hospital. In August of 2013 Dr. Durrani was indicted by the US Attorney on federal charges stemming from the claimed performance of medically unnecessary surgeries. While out of jail on bond, and having surrendered his passport, he somehow managed to flee the US. It has been reported that he is currently back in his native country of Pakistan. To date, in addition to the federal criminal charges, he has been sued by many of his former patients. It should also be noted that both the State of Ohio and the Commonwealth of Kentucky have suspended Dr. Durrani's license to practice medicine.
Many of Dr. Durrani’s former patients have filed since his conduct was brought to public light. Lawsuits have been filed in both Ohio and Kentucky, mainly in Ohio. However, 2 Kentucky lawsuits have been filed. One filed by Paul J. Schachter of Schachter, Hendy & Johnson of Ft. Wright, Kentucky and the other by Paul J. Schachter, as co-counsel to David Kramer of Dressman Benzinger LaVelle of Crestview Hills, Kentucky. Unlike in Ohio, Kentucky has more patient friendly laws which allow for the discovery of peer review records. These records are mostly considered privileged in Ohio and do not have to be turned over to patients bringing lawsuits for malpractice.
If you or someone you know was harmed by Dr. Durrani either in Ohio or in Kentucky there is a time limitation for patients to bring claims against the malpractice of Dr. Durrani. Courts in both states might consider that the last date for which cases may be filed to be August 7, 2014. Anyone with a claim should consider getting it reviewed as soon as possible.
