Whilst testosterone therapy may be beneficial for some, the effects on older men are somewhat unknown and potentially dangerous, Professor Stephanie Page from the University of Washington warns.
In a write-up for The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology, Page warns that the increasing prevalence of testosterone therapy amongst older North American men may be increasing cardiovascular risk, although further studies are needed to confirm.
Page warns that the therapy is now being overprescribed, fuelling a US industry worth billions of dollars. She advises physicians to have a more conservative approach to assessing need.
Page explained: “In an era when millions of men are using testosterone every day, support is urgently needed from both the public and medical communities to fund an appropriate clinical study to assess the risks and benefits of testosterone treatment in older men.
“There is a danger that funding and regulatory agencies will overinterpret the evidence from existing and ongoing observational studies, and conclude that larger and longer clinical trials are unnecessary and unwarranted. This conclusion would do men’s health a disservice”.
