A recent NPR article highlighted the risk of severe burns from instant noodle soup cups. Burn units across the country treat multiple patients each week for severe burns after the instant soup cups tip over spilling hot liquid and noodles on them. Most of the patients injured in these cases are young children. It is estimated that in one out of every five cases, the patient eventually needs surgery to treat the burns. Burn doctors have published several articles in medical journals regarding the significant risks posed by this particular product.
The instant soup cups are uniquely troublesome in causing burns as a result of their design. Most instant soup cups are tall, narrow and light-weight making them unstable. As a result, the cups are at least three times more likely to spill than shorter cups with a wider base. A study published in 2006 found that these kinds of spills could easily be prevented by simply modifying the design of the soup cups.
